texas holdemThe most popular poker game today is Texas Holdem, with game rooms open from North America to Europe, in addition to online. Like seven card stud, Texas Hold’em is played with seven cards; however, unlike stud, where each player has their own seven cards, in Texas Hold’em five of the seven cards are community cards shared by everyone, only two cards, known as „hole” cards, are dealt to each player and not shared.

Hold ‘em’s popularity surged in the 2000s due to television exposure, emergence on the Internet, and in popular literature, and after slow but steady gains in popularity throughout the 20th century. It has since ousted 7 card stud as the most popular U.S. card game. Casinos are almost totally eclipsing this once very common game. A betting form known as „no limit” is used widely in the televised main event of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.

Similarly to other variations of the poker game, Texas Hold ‘em involves players competing for the pot, the money everyone puts in. Since a player is unable to control what cards they receive, they try to control the next best thing, namely, how much money is placed in the pot, which may accurately or inaccurately reflect the cards in their hand.

This game is divided in a sequence of deals or hands and at the end of each hand, the pot is usually awarded to a single player (an exception to which is when the pot is divided between two or more people is discussed below). If a hand makes it to showdown, meaning all community cards have been dealt, and the only thing that remains is to show who has the best hand, all hands are revealed and the player with the best hand takes down the pot, unless there is a tie, in which case the players split the pot. Another scenario that can occur is for one player to remain after everyone else has folded their cards and gave up their claim to the pot, and it is awarded to that one person who did not fold.

Successful players know that to be competitive, it isn’t just about winning each hand, but being skillful in the amount to bet, and which call they should make. Winning poker players maximize long-term winnings by maximizing their expected utility on each round of betting by making such decisions.
